Communique Merida / Mexico,
The world is experiencing ever stronger weather phenomena, which are associated with global warming
and affect all the countries of the world in one way or another. While politicians are still struggling to
find solutions, young people around the world are taking to the streets and loudly calling for solutions.
Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist at the age of 16, sums up the situation as follows:
Around the year 2030, 10 years 252 days and 10 hours away from now, we will be in a position where
we set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control, that will most likely lead to the end of
our civilisation as we know it. That is unless in that time, permanent and unprecedented changes in all
aspects of society have taken place, including a reduction of CO2 emissions by 50%.
IPMA’s Council of Delegates has discussed during its meeting in Merida/Mexico the importance of
sustainability for projects, project managers and the project management profession at large. We
should all be aware of our responsibility in fulfilling the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United
Nations through performing projects and programmes in a sustainable manner, aiming at sustainable
outcomes and balancing the three “P” of “People”, “Planet” and “Profit”.
A globally spread association like IPMA with its 72 Member Associations shall provide the profession
with good practices such as IPMA´s Global Standards and recognise achievements of sustainability in
projects through IPMA´s Global Project Excellence and Individual Awards.
However, achieving sustainability requires actions and an active role of people involved in projects.
From Merida, the members of IPMA issue a call to action for all people around the world to support the
achievement of sustainability in and through projects.
IPMA President Dr. Jesus Martinez-Almela highlights that “the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of
the UN lead the way and are an urgent call for all people engaged in projects. IPMA will not cease to
make a contribution to the well-being of our society, people and nature. Merida is a fine example of
sustainability in every aspect, back from its Mayan origins to modern days, where ethnical diversity,
artistic, scientific and cultural expressions flourish everywhere, with great emphasis on an ecological
systems preservation. During IPMA´s 31st World Congress between September 30th and October 2nd
here at Merida it will be discussed how to better integrate sustainability into project management.”
The International Project Management Association (IPMA) is a federation of 72 member nations jointly
promoting the recognition of project management and engaging stakeholders around the world in
advancing the discipline. This communique has been released concurrently by all member associations
of IPMA.
